I know of men who consider mowing their lawn a sport. My own grandfather would readily admit it's one of his hobbies. It's not hard to figure out why. A few hours of what some could consider silence. Pure bliss.

You can find this make and model for just under $1000 usually. Even less if it's on sale! It's ideal for lawns that are less than 1.5 acres, with its 38" deck and 15.5 HP. Pretty basic but a customer favorite. It gets great reviews. No, it's not going to have a beer dispenser built into the dash but hey, isn't that what your kids are for? :)

This is going to run you about a hundred value cheeseburgers more than the Bolens model. Either lawnmoer is going to be a very cost effective mower with outstanding reviews. Comes equipped with a 17.5 HP Briggs & Stratton I/C engine. You can also get the optional mulcher, bagger or bumper. But the best part? High-tech, fancy cup holder. Holds your drink so you can focus on the finer things. Or make sure you don't run over anything.

Two words. CRUISE CONTROL. So, now you have a cup holder, and this baby practically drives itself. All we need now is a built-in Playstation 3. Jokes aside, you can buy a riding lawnmower with cruise control for much less than $3000, but John Deere is a household name and this is an awesome lawnmower. The X304 is sporting a 17HP V-Twin Kawasaki engine complete with the iTorque Power System. Has wonderful maneuverability due to the advantage of four wheel steering. Let's see, let's see. Automatic transmission, hydrostatic twin touch pedal control, and electronic dash. One of the highest rated mulchers on the market. Apparantly, according to lawn experts, mulching is better for your yard. All-in-all, this is just the kind of riding lawnmower you'd want to take home to your mom.

Cub Cadet iSeries ZTT 42

Look mom, no hands! The Cub Cadet is a 6 mile-per-hour grass-eating beast. Known for maneuvering well around obstacles, unless of course you've been drinking a little too much....lemonade. In which case, someone needs to take the keys away from the yard warrior. This model has a 42" deck, 18 HP Kohler Courage Engine and a high back seat that adjusts to it's rider. The Cub Cadet aims to please.

A Few More Things Before You Make Your Purchase

I've reviewed a couple of the top riding lawnmowers and I do hope it was helpful to someone. If in the event, you are not looking to spend so much money or aren't what I'd call a "grass-cutting specialist", check out your local paper for used machines. Buying a lawnmower used would be okay to do if you know what you're looking for and you know what to check for. If you aren't sure, ask a friend or relative who is more knowledgeable on equipment in this area. You don't want to get jipped. But I'm sure there are plenty of awesome secondhand mowers out there just waiting for a home. So keep this in mind if you are on a budget or love recycling!
